Missing !!!! These items have gone with the times.

Pippingcoffee.blogspot.in

A common man's necessity comes quite economic. It remains to be the same, unless time makes it a collectable item and desirable, and renders it an Antique.

Time has certainly changed. It has also taken away many items that we used earlier. Let’s go back in time to rediscover things of daily use that disappeared. Following is the list of items that have gone missing from our daily use.

  1. Camera with Rolls. Digital cameras have replaced the old ones.
  2. Black and White Television sets. We are watching probably the 6th Generation television in LED, LCD with variety of functions from acting as a PC screen to sharing data and storing in a cloud based storage.
  3. Videogames. Remember Mario, Super Contra, PacMan, Duck hunt, battle city etc? the kids from 1980’s and 90’s were different from this generation. They play on playstations. 3d games are dominating this section.
  4. Trunk Calls. I would like to put the old telephone set here. But again there is some life left in them before the mobile phones replace them completely.
  5. Moped. Luna, Sunny and others have vanished completely. This also applies to Hamara Bajaj, the priya scooter. The super savari just fizzed out with motorcycles and next generation scooters making them look out of date. By the way, I too had one which I gave away for a peanut… ages back.
  6. Letterbox. Who sends me a letter anyways. This means the era of postcards, inland letters and personalized letters is towards an end. Couriers have replaced the necessary paperworks. For anything else, there is a great variety of option from the social media. No doubt Whatsapp is now a verb.
  7. TV Antenna. Gosh, Imagine an india-Pakistan match and the channel goes down. Every Tom, Dick and Harry would be on the terrace trying to mend the Antenna. This was a major feature of any rooftop. Nowadays, ask any architect to allow these to be installed, and he/she will frown. Replaced by Dish.
  8. Ambassador and Maruti 800. Hindustan Motors and Maruti have stopped the production of these cars. One was the pride of a Babu or a Neta; the other was a symbol of purchase power among the working class. Sadly both share a memory that is waning.
  9. Classic Comics: Champak, Tinkle, Suppandi, Amar Chitra Katha by Pai brothers, Chacha Chaudhari, Sabu, Pinki, Billoo, Akbar Birbal, all are missing from the libraries. Only archives remain. The reading habits have been on the backburner and the mentioned list bears the brunt.
  10. Was indeed "Neighbour's Envy & Owner's Pride"
  11. Gramophone- People used to treasure the Gramophone records.
  12. Joint Family. Yes! The vanishing act. Small, nuclear families is a by-product of urbanization and will obviously see a growing trend.
  13. Row houses, with terrace space, backyard and a verandah are fast being converted into flats, apartments with lesser lights, NO VERANDAH!!!! … Perhaps the coming generation will never be able to enjoy what we did. The evening tea at terrace was a thing of beauty, and joy forever.
  14. Schools bags. The generation of the 60’s and 70’s used to carry Aluminium school trunks. While Replaced by synthetic material schools bags, waterproof with zips and Velcro. Note: School bags have become lighter but, the weight of books and burden of schooling gets growing. Bachpan Bhi Jal Raha hai !
  15. Brief case. Smart leather bags, shoulder bags and brain bags carrying laptops have taken their place.
  16. Girls hair styles and accessories: Hairband, Ribbon are missing. Not much of any other changes. Rather, my observation in this regard is weak.
  17. Shaktiman was replaced by Pokemon. Cartoons and superheroes have changed. We miss the Tom & Jerry, Potlibaba ki kahaniyaan, The Jungle Book, Duck Tales, Tailspin, The Disney Hour and likes. Nothing can replace them.
  18. Aaj ka Chhaya geet karyakram samapt Hua. Seems has been ages since I listened to the radio announcer. FM radio jockeys fail to create the magic that Vividh Bharati and AIR did. They ruled for over a period of 60 years before silently hiding behind the curtains.
  19. Doordarshan of old days.
  20. News with the tune of Samachar, Old news readers like Shammi Narang, Salma Sultana, Sunit Tandon, Geetanjali Iyer, Neethi Ravindran, Prannoy Roy
  21. Too much to write…..too much to misssssss.

  26. Parachute Coconut Oil. Flavoured oils have tapped the chunk of the market share.
  27. Pagers. This was a kind of Aayaram … Gayaram. Had a small life in India, for 2 years may be.
  28. Cycle. Used to be Aam Aadmi’s vehicle 2-3 decades ago. It lives a half life in form of trimmer in gym. Poor thing!!!
  29. Walkman.  Add with this, the cassette, and cassette player. Digitized music has killed the passion for collecting movie cassettes. Walkman lives in form of its incarnation… the i-Pod.
  30. Typewriter. The khat-khat-khatak-khat-khat sound has bid farewell. Only two companies manufacture typewriter in India. One of them is Godrej.
  31. Has it been ages since you filled ink in your pen? Ink and Ink pens that dominated the world for three centuries, was the symbol of power of the public, feared by even the mightiest has been lying in the drawer of the desk. Pen that was said to be mightier than swords, seldom sees the sunlight.
  32. Shaving razor. Multiblade safe razors and electronic trimmers have uprooted the blades, though barbers use the traditional one.
  33. Hamam, Mysore Sandal among others may still be there, but preferences have changed.
  34. Bullock carts and camel carts have in commercial vehicles, their nemesis.

  39. Devalued Indian Currency denominations. 1 Paise, 2 Paise, 5 Paise, 10 Paise, 25 Paise, 50 Paise have gone back into the treasury.
  40. Pepsi-cola,(Ice candy) available in pouches in one rupee, is no longer available.
  41. Every house had a collection of boxes of Dabur Chyawanprash, Horlics, Bournvita, Boost, Nutramul etc. Out of fashion.
  42. Rasna, while may be available these days, the charm and flavor is missing. I love you rasna was the most memorable tagline those days.
  43. The gossiping at Pan shop or nukkad, or ladies gossip at society gate is happening, on Whatsapp.
  44. Brands like Dhara refined oil. Remember the boy in “Jalebi” advertisement.
  45. Carrom & cards, played with either family or friends. It is available as teen patti.

  55. VCR. Watching movie was a family occasion and VCR cassettes on rent were a rage.
  56. Technicolor cinema, Eastman color were second generation movies before the silent and the black and white. High Definition and 3D have been the successors.
  57. Single screen movie theaters were a loved place. People have memories of watching cult movies over there. Single screen theaters have taken a hitting by the multiplexes over the last 2 decades and even in tier II cities and small towns, they are on verge of closing down.
  58. Kitchen gardens. Nowadays builders are quite innovative in designing homes. Space is limited so PATTA CUT.
  59. Brush your teeth, the first job in the morning. Colgate TOOTH POWDER. Tha na? Dant Manjan has moved beyond expiry date.
